45 Volunteers Unite to Build a Duplex in Christiansburg, VA
1901 Group and Habitat for Humanity Work Side by Side to Build a Better Future
RESTON, VA – December 6, 2018 – One in three households in the New River Valley area is considered “cost-burdened” – meaning families pay over 30% of their monthly income to cover housing costs. In an effort to help free families from this statistic, 1901 Group joins forces with Habitat for Humanity of the New River Valley to build a duplex home in Christiansburg, VA, that will be made affordable for two families to buy and help the community to thrive.
Construction on the Christiansburg duplex on Johnson Street began in April this year. With a passion to make a difference, more than 45 employees from the 1901 Group Blacksburg, VA, office devoted over 150 hours to assist with the community duplex build. As part of the Habitat for Humanity initiative to provide families the housing they need, and with the crew’s guidance, 1901 Group volunteers rolled up their sleeves to help build a porch, paint the interior, and construct the foundation with the dual goal of finishing a home that will house two families and supporting the vision that everyone needs a foundation to build a better future.
“We are proud to support Habitat for Humanity of the New River Valley as they set out to empower and strengthen their community by building stable homes. Our Compliance Specialist, Brittany Hiltonsmith, has been responsible for spearheading this effort. The team’s commitment to this project echoes our belief in giving back to our community through opportunities to volunteer and contribute to service programs, helping others who need a helping hand,” said Dana Pittman, SVP, Talent Strategy & Human Resources of 1901 Group. “We encourage the contributions our employees make in creating value for our colleagues, customers, and community.”
“Habitat for Humanity has always been an organization that moved me with their mission and countless accomplishments – to creating affordable housing across the nation for families, said Hiltonsmith. “It’s been an amazing journey to see the positive impact and memories we have created together. Selecting Habitat for Humanity as our community service initiative allows us the opportunity to truly make a difference to help serve the community and foster the culture of teamwork.”
