Tech savy girls from around the world come to Blacksburg

On July 26, 1901 Group participated in the U.S. Department of State’s TechGirls initiative by hosting four girls from the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia and job shadowing with several employees throughout the Blacksburg offices.

TechGirls is an international exchange program designed to empower girls in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields to pursue higher education and careers through hands-on skills development training with American technology leaders.

Legacy has partnered with VT’s Center for Enhancement of Engineering Diversity (CEED) and faculty at the Department of Computer Science to train the girls at the Blacksburg campus for the past few summers. Dana Pittman, SVP of Talent Strategies and Human Resources at 1901 Group, said she jumped at the opportunity to host a handful of students today. They’re going to tour the company’s Blacksburg office, talk to employees and executives.

1901 Group hopes to show the girls what technology jobs really look like and empower them to know there is a place for them in those careers.

“I’ve seen this in the industry for many years. There are still too few women. We want to be able to inspire and engage women through programs like TechGirls.”
