Welcome to Blacksburg

Blacksburg

You probably know Blacksburg as the home of Virginia Tech, one of the country’s top research universities. Blacksburg is also part of a thriving technology community, including the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center, a research park with over 140 tenant companies, including 1901 Group. The region also offers a comfortable lifestyle and a variety of cultural events and activities. It’s an area that’s welcoming to newcomers and people returning to their family or Hokie roots.

Technology Community

Blacksburg features a significant and growing community of technology businesses, representing industries such as IT, biological sciences, engineering, and health sciences. There are over 200 member organizations in the Roanoke Blacksburg Technology Council, a trade organization representing and facilitating connections among the region’s technology businesses. The region’s businesses provide opportunities for professional networking and the exchange of new ideas that facilitate the development of breakthrough innovation. There are exciting frontiers being explored daily, and companies like 1901 Group are charting the path to the future of science and technology.

Lifestyle

When it comes to lifestyle, there’s something for everyone in the welcoming New River Valley region—from urban living in Roanoke to college town life in Blacksburg to rural mountain homesteading in the surrounding areas. There’s a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, bicycling, camping, kayaking, and caving… to name a few! Smith Mountain Lake is a short drive away and offers a perfect vacation site or just a chance to take a swim or row. The Blacksburg Farmer’s Market runs year-round and features food and crafts from local growers and artisans.

Businessweek recently named Blacksburg the “Best Place in U.S. to Raise Kids,” heralding the town’s excellent public school system and community centers in addition to the low crime rate.

Benefits of a College Town

In addition to a thriving technology community, a comfortable lifestyle, and many cultural and social opportunities, Blacksburg’s benefits include the university itself. Many events are open to the public, including speakers, art exhibits, performances, and lectures. There are many educational opportunities even for members of the community who are not enrolled at Virginia Tech. And, of course, there are football, basketball, baseball, and all sorts of games and sporting events where you can don your maroon and orange and join thousands of fans in cheering on Virginia Tech athletics.

Please consider joining us here. We’d welcome you back or here for the first time. Go Hokies!
